To the High Lands

As I gazed out of the train window, my excitement grew with each passing mile. I was on my way to explore the enchanting Scottish North West Highlands, a region that boasted breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Armed with a map and a heart full of wanderlust, I eagerly anticipated the adventure that awaited me.

My first stop was the quaint village of Ullapool, nestled along the shores of Loch Broom. The colorful harbor welcomed me with open arms, as fishing boats bobbed lazily in the gentle waves. Wandering through the narrow streets, I stumbled upon an unassuming bakery tucked away in a corner. The aroma of freshly baked pastries lured me inside, and I savored a warm, buttery scone while gazing out at the mesmerizing view of the loch.

With my hunger satisfied, I set off on a drive along the North Coast 500, a scenic route that would take me through some of the most stunning landscapes Scotland had to offer. My next stop was the magnificent Corrieshalloch Gorge, a hidden gem concealed within the ancient forests. As I peered over the suspension bridge, my breath caught in my throat. The sight of the thundering Falls of Measach cascading down into the chasm below was simply awe-inspiring.

Continuing my journey, I found myself in the remote village of Kinlochewe, a gateway to the Torridon Mountains. Nestled amidst towering peaks and shimmering lochs, this place seemed like it belonged in a fairytale. I embarked on a hike through Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, where the vibrant colors of heather-covered hillsides and the haunting calls of golden eagles filled the air. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reconnect with nature and lose myself in the wilderness.

As my exploration continued, I ventured off the beaten path to the lesser-known village of Achiltibuie. Here, I discovered the remarkable Inverpolly Nature Reserve, a hidden treasure tucked away from the prying eyes of most tourists. This rugged landscape boasted countless lochans, mountains, and moorlands, creating a haven for wildlife. I spent hours wandering through the heather-clad hills, feeling as if I had stumbled upon a secret paradise.

The journey reached its climax when I arrived at the mesmerizing Isle of Skye. The mystical Fairy Pools beckoned me with their crystal-clear waters and cascading waterfalls. As I dipped my toes into the refreshing pools, I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. Skye's Old Man of Storr, an iconic rock formation, towered above me, its ancient presence a testament to the power of nature.

It’s rarely easy.

But it’s always worth it.

Each day in the Scottish North West Highlands was a tapestry of discovery and joy. From the charming villages to the majestic mountains, this corner of the world had stolen my heart. As I boarded the train back home, I carried with me not just memories but also a newfound appreciation for the hidden gems that lie off the beaten path. I was grateful for the opportunity to become a happy tourist, immersed in the beauty of the lesser-known locations that make Scotland's North West Highlands truly magical.
